Oil Creek State Park Trail

Great Spring Ride

May, 2024 by vicki1960

Warm and sunny Spring day parked in Petroleum Center next to the Park Office. Very well shaded. Biked to Titusville and back for a 25 mile round trip. While in Titusville also rode on Queen City Trail and rode through Drake Well park. The vehicle bridge in Petroleum Center has been closed at least 18 months and a new one isn't scheduled to be rebuilt until 2026. In the meantime, the bridge is open for pedestrians and cyclists. And as always, our State Parks in Pennsylvania are free to visit.

Not certain how much of the trail is closed but arrived this morning to discover there was no access at that point.

Meadville to Conneaut Lake Ride-May 2024

May, 2024 by vicki1960

Biked from Meadville (Beans Trailhead) to Conneaut Lake, approx 11 miles one way. First 4.25 miles are asphalt paved. Cross over route 19 and go approx 2 miles on gravel section to the Bailey Road trailhead. Continue West using the new Watson Run Bridge. The remaining 4 miles are dirt and grass and follows the old canal. This is very peaceful and scenic. Trail ends behind Conneaut Cellars Winery in Conneaut Lake. Doable on a hybrid bike but a gravel bike would work better. Saw a Beaver Dam, family of geese and various birds. The last 4 miles pass thru PA State Game Lands. Dress accordingly per season.

Mostly flat ride. Some sketchy areas, but nothing awful. Links fairly easily to other trails to put in more distance.

Moraine State Park Bike Trail

Spring Ride

May, 2024 by vicki1960

Usually hit this trail a few times a year. It's 7.5 ish miles in length, paved and follows the North Shore along Lake Arthur. There are many small hills and numerous turns. By all means this trail is far from straight! Trail starts at the bike rental (seasonal) and ends at Davis Marina where there is a beautiful view of the lake. Yellow line up the center of the trail has been recently painted. This park also offers boating, fishing, a beach, picnic areas, hiking (North Country Trail) disc golf and cabin rentals. Visit Moraine State Park website for more information.

Only made 20 minutes into my ride. Got a flat tire on the Ohio side of the trail. PA side was good.

Niles Greenway

afternoon ride on the Nile

The trail was fairly well-maintained sections of the of the trail had a lot of root heaves, which made the riding a little rough. There was a couple of road crossings that had jagged metal supports sticking up from the ground for posts that should’ve been there, if you’re not careful you might run over one as they’re not well marked.

Spring Ride

Spring ride and so much flooding along the trail. French Creek way above its creek banks, into the woods and the fields along the trail flooded. This is due to so much recent rains. Trail is open but high waters along side.

Spring Hike 2024 & Flooding

April, 2024 by vicki1960

Mid April, extremely high waters due to very large amounts of recent rains. Some of the trial unable to pass due to overflowing Shenango River. Safety is important! As long as we don't get much rain any time soon, water levels will drop and as always, get out and enjoy some great hiking!

Armstrong Trails

Nice trail

April, 2024 by vicki1960

While in the Schenley area, decided to scope the new bridge over the Kiskiminetas River. The historic bridge was recently refurbished to accommodate the bike trail. This bridge is at the very southern end of the trail at the Kiskiminetas Junction where the is an active rail line looking to the South towards the Tredway Trail. At the Kiski Junction/Schenley there is ample parking and lock #5 on the Allegheny River is nearby. Trail surface is crushed limestone and newly laid. Will get more packed down as there are more trail users. Headed North on this trail a few miles. Follows the Allegheny River. In Schenley there are quite a few old factories along the trail but heading North, becomes scenic and peaceful.
